The Society was established as The Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society in 1887. Among the distinguished forebears are Walter Crane, William de Morgan, and William Morris who became President of The Society in 1891. The Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society was designed to give a voice to beautiful, challenging and exciting work which was different from the traditional Fine Arts.
The Arts and Crafts Movement was one of the most influential, profound and far-reaching design movements in modern times. It began in the UK around 1880 quickly spreading across America and Europe later emerging in Japan as the Mingel (Folk Crafts) movement. The Arts and Crafts Movement of was based on ideals. It grew out of a concern for the effects of industrialisation on design, on traditional skills and on the lives of ordinary people.

In 1960, the Society became the Society of Designer Craftsmen when it merged with The Cambridgeshire Guild of Craftsmen. Today, it promotes and supports the work of creative thinkers, designers and makers. Those who continue to innovate in the crafts through their exploration of material and skills.
The membership is international with members from Canada, Australia and Japan. It offers a vast resource of experience offering advice about all aspects of design and craftsmanship including commissioning.
The Designer Crafts Exhibition is held every year at The Mall Galleries in London which is well established on the London scene. There are also other national exhibitions and events.
There is a dedicated gallery space at The Society’s headquarters at 24 Irvington Street, London EC2A3DU. This provides further exhibiting opportunities with themed shows throughout the year.
The Society of Designer Craftsmen acts as a point of contact for commissioning. It will put you in touch with some of the most innovative and talented design makers. Those who embrace traditional and contemporary techniques in an inspiring way. Many of the established members have carried out national and international commissions.
