Tuition and Courses

I offer tuition in sculpture, stone carving, stone letter carving and relief to individuals and small groups throughout the year at flexible times at The Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop. These courses are designed for those who would like to discover The Art of Stone Carving, an ancient form of art which is still popular today.

You will learn to think three dimensionally and how to manipulate the stone from the basic idea to the finished work. You will learn the importance of drawing your design onto the stone before carving, thinking about style, proportion, spacing and form before the process of carving begins.

One Day Stone Letter Carving or Relief Course for Individuals or Small Groups

This course takes place from 9.30 to 16.30 throughout the year. Before the course begins, you will be asked to look at different types of lettering and design styles and to think about what you would like to carve during the course. Please wear suitable clothing and safety glasses will be provided.

The course will include the following:

Stone Letter Carving

At the beginning of the session, there will be a discussion about the tools and how to use them correctly. The student will be shown the importance of the V cut and different ways to cut stone. There will be a discussion about what students would like to carve. Realistically, one or two words are achievable in two days if you have some experience.

Before the carving process begins, we will also discuss style, proportion, spacing and form and the importance of drawing before preparation. We will look at how to transfer your design from your sketches on paper to the stone. Students will then begin to draw their design in preparation for carving.

Relief Carving

The course will include an introduction to Stone Relief Carving with Limestone or Portland stone. We will look at the tools such as the hammer, claw and chisel and learn the important techniques of chopping, chasing, and levelling. You will then think about a design and learn how to draw and trace it out onto stone. The idea will be to create a low to medium cut relief but those with more experience can attempt a more complicated design.

Two Day Stone Letter Carving Course

The Two-Day Introductory Stone Letter Carving Course is designed for individuals or small groups who have little or no experience of stone letter carving. The course takes place from 9.30 to 16.30 at flexible times throughout the year and breaks and lunch are taken at the onsite cafe.

Before the course begins, you will be asked to look at different types of lettering and design. You will also be asked to think about what you would like to carve during the course as this will save time. Realistically, one or two words is sufficient for this course depending on experience.

The course will include the following:

Day One

Day One from 9.30 to 13.00

Students will learn about the tools and how to use them correctly before they begin. There will be a discussion about how to cut straight, curved, diagonally and in depth creating the all -important clean V cut channel.

The afternoon will be spent practising what has been learnt during the morning and then the students will begin to cut their first number or letter with personalised tuition and guidance from me.

Day Two

Day Two from 9.30 to 16.30

There will be a discussion about the importance of drawing the design before carving looking at proportion and spacing. We will look at how to transfer your design from your sketches on paper to the stone and there will be a discussion about style and form.
