When you decide to commission a handcarved bespoke gravestone, memorial or headstone, you will need to consider:
Gravestones, Memorials & Headstones Inscriptions
Regulations
You need to understand the churchyard and cemetery regulations as they differ between regions. You will need to make an application for permission to erect a headstone or memorial.
Take Time
Take you time when deciding on the design, wording, and epitaph as this will dictate the size and type of stone to be used.
Look at the Location
Look at the surrounding and location for the headstone. Do you want it to stand out or blend into the cemetery ? What size, colour and type of stone would you like?
Choosing a Stone
Decide on the type of stone to be used, the colour and does it need to be weather proof? What is the inscription length as this will affect the font size? And what are the lead times for the stone as some specialist stones take longer to be supplied.
Add the names and dates of birth and death
Do you want to add the day, month and year or just the years of birth and death?
Add interest and make it personal
Think of the person you are commemorating and how you would like to remember them?
Be Creative and use quotations, poems and reliefs
Think of a quotation or poem that reflects the person or use a relief or symbol to add interest. Choose wording that is timeless.
Make it simple and not too long
Less is more and has more impact.
