We’ve put together a menu of short breaks consisting of a 2-day art workshop and 3 overnight stays in high quality accommodation with breakfast. Check out descriptions for details. The short breaks can be arranged for different dates, subject to availability. Accommodation prices vary depending on the time of year and if your preferred dates are mid-week or weekend dates. Simon is a professional sculptor and letter carver working mainly in stone and marble but also in other media. You can find out more about him and see examples of his work on his profile page.
The workshop is suitable for beginners and more experienced sculptors alike and contents will be tailored to your skills level and interests. If you’ve never done any stone carving before, you will learn to think three-dimensionally and how to manipulate the stone from the basic idea to the finished work. If you opt for letter carving, you will learn the importance of drawing your design onto the stone before carving, thinking about style, proportion, spacing and form before the process of carving begins.
At an additional cost we will ship your finished pieces to your home address.
The location and accommodation – Edinburgh and Ten Hill Place hotel
It’s impossible to summarise the Scottish capital city in one paragraph. Edinburgh is buzzing with creativity, culture and history. This website https://edinburgh.org/ is a good starting point for exploring it before your visit. Ten Hill Place Hotel is a 4-star hotel owned by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and all profits from the hotel go back into training surgeons worldwide. It’s recently been refurbished and the spacious lounge is a feelgood space to sit and relax. Edinburgh is quite easy for moving around by public transport or taxis, so there’s no need to bring or hire a car.
Day 1 – arrival at Ten Hill Place hotel. Check in is from 3pm. We will have plenty recommendations of things to do and see in your information pack.
Days 2 & 3 – The art workshop will run from 10am to around 4.30pm. Next to the workshop is a nice café next to the workshop where you can have lunch.
Day 4 – departure day. Check out is by 11am. No doubt you’ll be hooked on carving and planning your next workshop!
