Two Day Marble Carving Course

The two day marble carving course with Simon Burns-Cox is designed for those who would like to learn the techniques for carving marble. You do not need experience and the course is open to beginners and those with more experience. The course is from 9.30am to 4.30pm and run independently at The Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop in Edinburgh, Scotland. Dates are flexible and are mutually agreed with the workshop. The course is small with up to two people or for small private groups. Individual tuition is also available.

Marie Curie Edinburgh Brain Game 2022

I was recently asked to make a trophy for the Marie Curie Brain Game Dinner in Edinburgh on Thursday 9th June 2022. It is made from black slate with a white marble base measuring 30 x 21 x 12cm.

Private Tuition in Stone Letter Carving and Relief

I offer Private Tuition in Stone Letter Carving and Relief to individuals or small private groups of up to three people at The Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop. Tuition is arranged on mutually convenient dates throughout the year. Tuition takes place outside but under cover and there is a cafe on site for breaks and lunch.

Memorial Plaque

I have recently made this memorial plaque which will be fixed onto the wall of the cemetery to commemorate the deceased. A plaque is usually made when the person has been cremated and not buried. This plaque is made from green slate from The Lake District in the UK measuring 50 x 50 x 3cm with a handcarved relief.

Garden Wall Plaque

This is a Garden Wall Plaque which I made recently for a 30th Wedding Anniversary gift. It is made from Portland Stone with dimensions of 23 x 23 x 4cms and includes the date of the marriage and a flower relief. Garden Wall Plaques are a good way of celebrating an anniversary or special event.

I make bespoke hand-carved Memorials and Headstones in stone and marble. As the work is done by hand, the client can choose what they require, and I offer both traditional and contemporary designs. The whole process is done by hand from the design and drawings through to the letter carving, reliefs, and finish.

Additional Words for a Headstone

If a headstone is already in place, it is often possible to add the names of additional family members. However, this does depend on whether there is enough room to add the name of the recently deceased with the dates of their birth and death.

Inscriptions in Arcadia

I have just completed some stone letter carving work for Audrey Grant, the artist, who has been working on her project  'Inscriptions in Arcadia' at Bothkennar Pools, near Skinflats for the Forth Valley Art Beat Project. This opens from the 3rd July to 31st August 2021. I was asked to carve the words 'Et in Arcadia ego' onto a stone wall at Barony Pit steam engine platform.

I have recently been making a water basin for a Japanese garden and came across the Japanese technique of Kintsugi which is used in ceramics. Today, artists often experiment with this ancient technique as a way of illustrating loss and destruction followed by repair or rebirth.
